Everything You Need to Know About COVID-19 Testing | Health | Hudson Valley | Chronogram Magazine

Note: This story was updated July 1 with new information.

When should you get tested and where? What symptoms would someone need to be experiencing in order to be tested? We have gathered all the COVID-19 testing information for each county in the Hudson Valley and Catskills and compiled it into this comprehensive list.

Please note the testing centers listed under each county are only the public sites listed by each county. Additional testing locations can be found by calling each county’s coronavirus hotline, calling the New York State hotline at (888) 364-3065, or visiting the New York State testing location website.

Statewide Testing Guidelines

New York State has aggressively expanded COVID-19 diagnostic testing capacity. Beginning July 1, testing is available to all New Yorkers statewide.

If you are interested in being tested for COVID-19, you can pre-register by taking an online assessment and screening tool prior to being tested, to streamline the process.

Testing is free to all eligible New Yorkers as ordered by a healthcare provider or by calling the NYS COVID-19 hotline at (888) 364-3065. If you go to a test site run by New York State, there is never any charge for your test. If you go to a test site operated by local governments, private companies including pharmacies and medical practices or not-for-profit organizations, you are advised to check with the testing site and your insurer in advance to confirm you will not be responsible for any fees associated with your test.

In addition to diagnostic testing, which looks for the presence of an active COVID-19 infection, there is also antibody testing, which screens for evidence that someone has previously had COVID-19 and recovered from it. Antibody testing may also be available through local healthcare providers.

Antibody testing is useful to determine how much of a local population has had COVID-19, but is not very helpful in making individual medical decisions. In areas where there have not been widespread outbreaks, and the number of people with antibodies to COVID-19 is very small, false positive results may even outnumber true positives, even if the test your doctor is using mostly gives accurate results. Consult your healthcare provider if you are considering an antibody test.

We have compiled a list of information about local diagnostic test sites open to the public. Availability of testing and site details listed below may change; please call the facility, your county health department, or the New York State coronavirus hotline at (888) 364-3065 for the latest information.

In addition to the test sites listed below, private physicians, urgent care clinics, and pharmacies may offer diagnostic COVID-19 testing. Call your local doctor or pharmacy to find out, or visit the New York State testing location website to find more locations.
